Charity coalition to publish league table of text donation costs

CAF and Insitute of Fundraising among those lobbying for cuts in operators' fees
A coalition lobbying for cuts in mobile phone operators' fees on text message donations will publish a league table setting out how much each operator charges per donation.
The league table, which will be updated regularly, could be used by charities to discourage users of the higher-charging networks from making text donations. The coalition, comprising the Charities Aid Foundation, the Institute of Fundraising and a number of charities and fundraising agencies, says this would put operators under pressure to reduce charges.
Joe Saxton, co-founder of research organisation nfpSynergy and the coalition's leader, said: "We want to highlight how different the charges are between the operators and to give a sense of how effective text message donations are."
He said charities could set up systems that excluded users of the higher-charging networks from donating to them by text message. "If a charity allowed donations only from users of networks that gave, say, 90 per cent of all donations to the charity, they could mention in their advertising campaigns that they would receive 90 per cent of all money donated by text," said Saxton.
"Then they could say users of certain networks could not take part because their operators' charges were too high."
Last week, Vodafone increased the proportion passed to charities from 86 per cent to 90 per cent - the same as O2. Saxton is to meet Orange to discuss the lowering of its charges.
The league table is likely to be published at the end of March.
