Lawyers criticise commission's stance on charitable purposes

A number of experienced charity lawyers are dismayed by the refusal of some Charity Commission case officers to register charities that use the terminology of the Charities Act 2006 to describe their charitable purpose.

The act lists 13 purposes, such as the advancement of community development and the relief of those in need. But some lawyers have found registration applications that use the phrases from the act are rejected. "We have had one case where the case worker has refused to register a charity...
