Newsreader Huw Edwards hosts black-tie ceremony for winners, including Employee of the Year, Kate Neville of Capital Group Companies; Barclays wins three categories
A City worker who helped to raise more than £540,000 for the medical aid charity Merlin and the managing director of a plumbing supplies firm were among the winners of Third Sector’s Business Charity Awards last night.
Kate Neville, who works for the investment management firm Capital Group Companies, picked up the Outstanding Employee award for her work with Merlin at the ceremony – a black-tie dinner at the Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Park Lane.
And Ian Church, managing director of Plumbing Trade Supplies, won Business Charity Champion for his work coordinating the charity work of his employer’s parent company, the building supplies firm the Travis Perkins Group.
Travis Perkins itself won Business of the Year for its partnership – organised by Church – with Breast Cancer Campaign and the children’s hospices organisation Together for Short Lives. The partnership included painting a fleet of the firm’s delivery trucks pink and selling pink building products in its stores.
Other notable winners included Barclays, which became the first triple winner in the three years of the Business Charity Awards by winning prizes for CSR Team, Employee Engagement and Overseas Project.
Edwards, who has been chosen as anchorman for coverage of the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, said: "The winners were even more impressive than last year and the year before that - and my sincerest congratulations to you all."
Nearly 500 people attended the ceremony, sponsored by the Charities Aid Foundation. Guests included Gareth Thomas, shadow minister for civil society, and Sir Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the charity chiefs umbrella body Acevo.
