The Flowers of Thanks virtual garden
The meningitis charity has launched a virtual garden to raise money and public awareness
What is it?
The ‘Flowers of Thanks’ virtual garden is an online fundraising tool launched earlier this month. The garden allows members of the public to write memories and messages on the website about people that have been affected by the disease.
How does it work?
By donating £10 or more, visitors to the garden can pick a flower - the varities available include sunflowers, daisies and lilies. They are then asked to dedicate the flower to someone, give their own name, explain why they’re planting it – either in memory of a loved one or to give thanks – and write a message. The flower is then displayed on the home page of the website, where visitors can read the dedications.
Anything else?
As well as raising money, the site aims to increase the public’s awareness of the charity and the disease, and to allow supporters to share stories and post to social networks. The website includes information about what the charity does, and three short films showing how the charity helps those affected by the disease.
How is it being promoted?
The garden is being promoted through Meningitis Trust’s website, newsletters, its Facebook page and Twitter feed. Visitors can also opt to share the website on their own Twitter and Facebook pages. It currently has 81 flowers planted.

This simple website is a great way of giving people a platform to write about their loved ones who have been affected by the disease. The emotional messages are very moving to read, and the flowers are a basic but effective tool to show how many people have been affected by meningitis. The videos also bring three individuals' stories to life and create personal messages from those featured that is sure to help raise funds for the charity’s work.
