Its annual review shows that the learning disability charity raised £12.8m in 2011/12, and its total income was about £200m

The learning disability charity Mencap increased its fundraising totals by almost 60 per cent in 2011/12.

The charity’s annual review, published last month, shows that the charity raised £12.8m over the course of the year – a 59 per cent increase on the previous year.

Mencap received £4.9m in 2011/12 through its charity of the year partnership with the Co-operative. It also raised £5.4m from legacies and £3m from grants and trusts. The charity’s overall income was about £200m during the year, up from £193m in 2010/11.

Faith Ingham, assistant director of fundraising at Mencap, said the charity had made a number of changes to the focus of its fundraising team's work. "Most notably, we invested in our direct marketing activity, which will enable us to grow the donor base and income significantly in coming years," she said. "We have also revised and refreshed our corporate, trust and strategic funding strategies."

A spokeswoman for the charity said that in 2012/13 it was budgeting for a 12 per cent increase on its 2010/11 fundraising total of £8m. However it can no longer rely on its partnership with the Co-operative, which won a Third Sector Excellence Award this year, because it has come to an end.

Grants secured by the charity in 2011/12 included £700,000 from the Department of Health for a three-year project called Parent Pioneers, which supports parents with learning disabilities, and £600,000 from the Office for Civil Society’s Social Action Fund for its Changemakers programme, which supports young people to volunteer.
