Communities department has announced funding for umbrella body Youth United
The Communities and Local Government department will give £10m to the umbrella body Youth United to fund the recruitment and training of 2,700 new volunteers at groups including Scouts, Girl Guides, Boys’ Brigade and St John Ambulance.
The money is expected to allow the organisations to set up 400 new youth groups, which could be joined by 10,000 young people, over the next two and a half years.
Youth United, set up by the Prince of Wales and supported by his charitable foundation, is a group of major youth volunteering organisations including the Scouts, St John Ambulance and various cadet groups. It will distribute the funding to its member groups in regions set out by the department (see below).
In a statement, the CLG said the funding would be targeted at areas of England "where historically there have been limited opportunities" to take part in the youth groups, including Bradford, Rochdale, Middlesbrough and Tower Hamlets in London.
It said the cash would be used as start-up money to set up the 400 new branches, and that once established, they should be funded through subscriptions and fundraising activities.
The communities secretary, Eric Pickles, said in the statement: "Scouts, guides and the cadets have a tremendously proud and successful history of giving young people the kind of fun, life skills and experiences they can’t get anywhere else.
"They rely on the goodwill and dedication of trained adult volunteers to provide this community service, which brings young people of all backgrounds and beliefs together. Every young person in the country should have the chance to participate if they want to."
The funding will be given to Youth United’s members, which are:
The Scout Association
St John Ambulance
Volunteer Police Cadets.
The money will be spent in 15 areas:
Broadwater Farm Estate (Tottenham, north London)
Redcar (Redcar and Cleveland).
