New website calls on Chancellor George Osborne to abandon the proposed cap on tax reliefs
More than 200 organisations support Give It Back, George, set up by the NCVO and the Charities Aid Foundation
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the Charities Aid Foundation have set up a website calling on the Chancellor, George Osborne, to abandon the proposed cap on tax reliefs.
The site is designed to act as a focal point for lobbying the government over the measure, announced by Osborne in last week’s Budget. The cap will mean that tax relief an individual can claim in any year will be limited to a quarter of their income or £50,000, whichever is higher, from April 2013.
The website, Give It Back, George, is being backed up by a Twitter hashtag of the same name in a bid to put pressure on the government over the cap. The site already has the backing of more than 200 voluntary sector organisations, including the Institute of Fundraising, the Charity Finance Group and the Community Foundation Network.
The move comes after six major voluntary groups, including the NCVO and the IoF sent a letter to Osborne last week aksing for an urgent meeting to discuss the negative effect they believe the cap will have on charitable giving.
