Updated figures show that charities are expected to claim £1.075bn in Gift Aid in 2011/12
HM Revenue & Customs has revised downwards its estimate of how much Gift Aid charities will claim in 2011/12.
HMRC estimated last month that the sector would claim £1.13bn in Gift Aid during the tax year. However, its updated figures say that charities are expected to claim £1.075bn in 2011/12.
Charities claimed £1.101bn of Gift Aid in 2010/11.
The updated figures show that VAT relief paid to charities is expected to rise from £200m in 2010/11 to £250m in 2011/12, and inheritance tax relief is expected to rise from £445m to £460m over the same period.
HMRC says that the amount that will be claimed by higher-rate taxpayers on donations to charity will still rise from £350m to £360m.
Altogether, it now expects tax reliefs for donors and charities to be worth £3.64bn.
