School helps voluntary groups with digital start-ups
Carers UK and three other organisations will take part in scheme to develop digital applications
The social investment charity the Nominet Trust is offering four charities a share of £600,000 to develop a digital start-up idea.
Successful applicants will take part in the three-month Sidekick School programme, which helps voluntary sector organisations build digital products or services that can generate revenue and is run by the digital agency Sidekick Studios.
The Nominet Trust will give grants of £150,000 to fund each successful programme. The chosen charities will have to pay £20,000 to the trust to demonstrate their commitment to the programme if their application is successful.
Carers UK has been chosen as the first of the four organisations that will take part. The charity is developing a mobile app to help carers who juggle paid work with looking after a loved one.
Heléna Herklots, chief executive of Carers UK, said: "As we struggle to balance the many responsibilities in our everyday lives – childcare, work, social and community activities – with support for older or disabled loved ones, we will need exactly the kind of innovative solutions that this partnership offers."
