Chief executive of UK Export Finance will take over from the social lender's Malcolm Hayday on 19 November

The social lender Charity Bank has appointed Patrick Crawford as its new chief executive.

He is chief executive of UK Export Finance, the government department that acts as the UK’s export credit agency, and will replace the outgoing Malcolm Hayday on 19 November.

Crawford, who qualified as a barrister before embarking on a career in banking, is a former global head of project and export finance at Deutsche Bank.

Charity Bank has also appointed Malcolm Elliott to the new position of deputy chief executive. He joins from the financial services company Just Retirement, where he was head of risk reporting.

In a statement, Crawford said he was attracted to Charity Bank because it was "a clear success story that can only get better".

He said: "If you identify the banking crisis as having started with Northern Rock’s forced decision to stop lending to its customers five years ago, Charity Bank has bucked the banking trend, growing its deposit book by more than 200 per cent and its lending by more than 300 per cent in that time.

"While some banks carry some responsibility for their role in the credit crisis, the vast majority have suffered as a result. Charity Bank is the notable exception and has grown since the financial crisis."

Hayday announced in February that he planned to stand down this year after 10 years at Charity Bank.
