Donations from the UK public to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s appeal to help people suffering from severe food shortages in east Africa have passed £30m.

The DEC, an umbrella organisation of 14 humanitarian aid organisations, launched its East Africa Crisis Appeal on 3 July.

Money raised will go to help the more than 10 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and the Republic of South Sudan affected by the drought and food shortages in the region.

Total donations from the UK public have passed £30m, a statement from the DEC said.

Brendan Gormley, chief executive of the Disasters Emergency Committee, said: "The UK public has been wonderfully generous since we announced our East Africa Crisis Appeal."
