Award to NSPCC service is part of £11.3m given out in the final round of grants from last year's appeal
BBC Children in Need has awarded up to £500,000 to the NSPCC for its ChildLine service in response to the Sir Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal.
A statement from the BBC’s corporate charity said the award, which is part of £11.3m of funding handed out in the final round of grants from last year’s Children in Need appeal, was being made "in response to the recent high-profile allegations of sexual abuse".
Children in Need said it was also "preparing to respond to future growth in requests for grants for projects that are supporting children and young people across the UK currently affected by these issues".
The corporation has come under criticism in recent weeks in relation to allegations made against Savile, a former BBC presenter.
The £11.3m of funding announced today by Children in Need will go to projects across the UK that help disadvantaged children and young people.
It takes the total funding allocated from the proceeds of last November’s record-breaking appeal to £47m.
A spokeswoman for Children in Need was unable to confirm the exact amount given to the NSPCC.
