Legacy giving totalled £1.8bn in 2011, with Cancer Research UK receiving the highest income from people’s wills, according to research by the Charities Aid Foundation.
CRUK consistently tops league tables of legacy giving and received £148.9m in 2011 based on CAF’s analysis of accounts logged with the Charity Commission.
The RNLI was the next highest earner, receiving £97.7m, and the British Heart Foundation was third with £54.9m.
A spokesman for CAF said legacy giving totals did not change that much and, in 2007, the figure was £1.7bn.
Data from the Charity Market Monitor report by the Cass Business School, based on the 2007/08 fundraising income of the UK’s top 300 charities, found that CRUK was the highest earner of legacy income, receiving £147.8m. The RNLI came next in this report on £94.5m and the RSPCA was third with £63.1m.
