The auction of the bicycle at the centre of the ‘plebgate’ row has raised more than £10,000 for Nyumbani UK, which helps Kenyan children who are affected by HIV and AIDS.

The bicycle was donated by Andrew Mitchell, the former international development secretary, who said it had become too recognisable after the controversy.

The Sutton Coldfield MP denied calling police "plebs" when they refused to open the Downing Street gates so he could ride through them last September.

Mitchell subsequently resigned as the government chief whip, but the incident is subject to a continuing police inquiry.

An auction of the bicycle on eBay closed last night, with bids reaching £10,600. The buyer’s identity has not been revealed.

"I am pleased it has raised so much for Nyumbani UK," said Mitchell. "The auction has gone better than I thought it would and I hope the bike’s new owner will enjoy riding it as much as I have."

Simon Philips, chair of Nyumbani UK, said: "The charity is extremely grateful to Mr Mitchell for donating his beloved bike for auction. All proceeds will go towards providing these children with the best nutritional, medical, educational and psychosocial care, and will definitely make a tangible difference to their lives."
