The environmental charity Groundwork South West has gone into administration with the loss of 130 jobs.
Staff at the organisation, which has its headquarters in Plymouth, were told on Wednesday that they were being made redundant with immediate effect, according to a statement from the charity’s national body, Groundwork UK.
Trustees of Groundwork South West decided to initiate administration proceedings, the statement said.
A spokesman for Groundwork UK would not say why the charity had gone into administration. He said administrators were due to be appointed within days. Calls to the Plymouth HQ of Groundwork South West were not being answered today.
Just weeks ago the charity opened its first shop in Plymouth city centre.
Groundwork South West, which has 11 offices around the region, including in Bristol, Bournemouth and Weymouth, is one of 35 independent charities that make up the Groundwork Federation.
This year marks the charity’s 21st anniversary of working with communities and other organisations to improve the local environment.
Sir Tony Hawkhead, chief executive of Groundwork UK, said: "We are obviously very sad to see a member of our federation forced to take this difficult step.
"We aim to work closely with administrators when they are appointed to provide whatever help we can to ensure communities in the south west continue to get the support they need."
