TV broadcaster Lewis, who founded the volunteering organisation YouthNet, says he is delighted to take over the role from Sir Graham Melmoth

The former newsreader Martyn Lewis has taken over as chair of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.

He was identified as the preferred candidate for the role in April and his appointment was confirmed at the NCVO annual general meeting last night after no other alternative candidate was put forward.

He succeeds Sir Graham Melmoth, who stands down after serving the maximum of two terms in the position.

Lewis, who founded the youth volunteering charity YouthNet, is chair of The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and president of United Response, which helps people with disabilities. He was awarded the CBE in 1997 for services to young people and the hospice movement.

In a statement, Lewis said: "I am delighted to be on board and look forward to driving forward NCVO's work in the months ahead."
