Charities plan to hire staff

But only 7 per cent of 1,019 respondents to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development study were from the voluntary sector

Employment levels in the voluntary sector are set to grow over the next three months, in contrast to the trend in the public and private sectors, a survey suggests.

A fifth of charities surveyed by The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development for its latest Labour Market Outlook report, published today, plan to hire rather than cut staff this quarter.

The figures must be treated with caution because charity staff only made up 7 per cent of the 1,019 human resources professionals surveyed.

The net amount of organisations in the voluntary sector planning to create jobs against those that plan to reduce their headcount rose 6 percentage points from the previous quarter to 20 per cent.

The percentage of respondents from the voluntary sector expecting to make redundancies fell from 42 per cent to 31 per cent since summer 2011, it showed.

There was a 3 percentage point increase in the number of voluntary organisations planning to give a pay rise compared with the previous quarter to 28 per cent.

Across all sectors, 8 per cent more employers expected to cut jobs rather than hire staff this quarter – the worst level since the recession began.
