Chief executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care is knighted for services to palliative care

Thomas Hughes-Hallett, chief executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care, has been given a knighthood in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list.

Other high-profile awards include CBEs for Lesley-Anne Alexander, chief executive of the RNIB and chair of Acevo, Kevin Curley, former chief executive of Navca and a Third Sector columnist, and Bob Reitemeier, the former chief executive of the Children’s Society.

CBEs also go to Carole Cochrane, former chief executive of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, and Clare Jones, joint chief executive of WomenCentre.

Hughes-Hallett, who will retire from Marie Curie later this year, also chaired the Philanthropy Review, the group set up to promote high-level charitable giving. He has been given the award for services to palliative care.

Recipients of OBEs include Jane Ryder, the former chief executive of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, Polly Gowers, founder of the online fundraising platform EveryClick, Mike Adams, chief executive of the Essex Coalition of Disabled People, Vivien Cooper, founder and chair of trustees of The Challenging Behaviour Foundation, and Martin Green, chief executive of the English Community Care Association.

OBEs also go to David Liddell, director of the Scottish Drugs Forum, Eric Low, chief executive of Myeloma UK, Ruth Owen, chief executive of the disability charity Whizz-Kidz, Sally Reynolds, co-founder and former chief executive of Social Firms UK, and Bill Travers, chief executive of the Born Free Foundation.

The Cabinet Office said that 72 per cent of awards in the list had gone to people who were actively engaged in charitable or voluntary work within their local communities.
