Acevo to set up women's group

By John Plummer, Third Sector Online, 9 December 2008

Chief executives body to establish special interest group to tackle gender pay gap

Frustration over the widening gender pay gap has prompted chief executives body Acevo to establish a special interest group for women.

The Acevo Pay Survey 2008/09 revealed the difference in average pay between male and female charity chief executives had widened from £8,700 to £11,000 in the past year.

Jenny Berry, director of Acevo North, sent an email to Acevo members to assess interest in a group looking at issues of particular interest for women charity leaders and was "completely staggered" by the response.

"I thought I would get a few emails back, but I have been completely swamped," she said. "People, myself included, thought things like pay weren't an issue any more, so the survey was a huge surprise."

Berry said about 60 women had responded to her email and that she was organising two meetings early next year – one in the north of England, the other in the south – with a view to setting up a group.

Although it was pay that prompted interest in the group, it will also focus on other Acevo issues such as governance and training and development from a gender perspective.

"One of the strongest concerns to come through has been how we can get more young women to become chief executives in the future," said Berry.

I first tackled this issue in Devon about ten years ago. I had hoped things had moved on!
