New group will lobby Euro Commission on tax

By David Ainsworth, Third Sector, 9 June 2009

Charity Tax Group, European Foundation Centre and European Fundraising Association join forces

Charity tax campaigners are planning to form a pan-European association to lobby the European Commission on tax issues.

The Charity Tax Group, the UK umbrella body that lobbies government for a better deal on charity tax, will be among the bodies attending a meeting in Madrid next week to discuss what can be done to ensure closer working between tax groups in member states.

Among the other bodies attending the meeting, part of a wider conference on European VAT for charitable bodies, will be the European Foundation Centre, which promotes the work of funders across Europe, and the European Fundraising Association.

"We wanted to use our various memberships to get a better sense of what would work if we campaigned at a European level," said Mathieu Mori, policy officer at the CTG.

"The first thing we need to do is talk to each other and find out what people in other member states think about the situation at the moment.

"This is a way of getting a much wider input, rather than each organisation campaigning alone."

The new organisation would build on the work carried out by Eccvat, a European body that has campaigned for a better deal on VAT for charities across the EU, added Mori.
