Social enterprises welcomed on board at the Governance Hub

By Mathew Little, Third Sector Online, 11 June 2007

The Social Enterprise Coalition has become a core group member of the Governance Hub. The move marks a broadening of focus for the hub, which has previously focused mainly on the needs of charities.

Until now the hubs partners have been groups that support charities, including Acevo, Volunteering England, the NCVO and Navca.

John Goodman, trustee of the Social Enterprise Coalition, said: “We are delighted to be strengthening our relationship with the Governance Hub by joining its core group. This is a welcome move towards ChangeUp embracing the needs of the wider third sector and a recognition by social enterprises of the importance of good governance.”

The Governance Hub already has an advisory role with umbrella body Co-operatives UK and is undertaking research into the governance needs and perceptions of social enterprises.

The research is examining the challenges of governing a social enterprise and the resources and services available. It will identify any additional help that the hub can provide.

The governance hub is one of six national hubs of expertise funded by the government’s ChangeUp voluntary sector infrastructure programme. They will be replaced by new national support services in 2008.
