Scottish Executive plans to increase role of social enterprises
By Ben Cook, Third Sector Online, 27 June 2007
The Scottish Executive has announced proposals to boost the role of social enterprises in public service delivery through a three-year action plan, which will include funding from a Scottish investment fund.
John Swinney, cabinet secretary for finance and sustainable growth, said the executive was also reviewing the £18m Futurebuilders Scotland programme, with a view to introducing a new “successor programme”.
“Social enterprises have demonstrated that they can work in many sectors of the economy, often as the best solution in areas where there is market failure,” said Swinney. “We will look to create a three year action plan to help social enterprises reach their potential as deliverers of services that we need.”
He added that the Executive was “committed to investing in social enterprise through a Scottish Investment Fund”.
Swinney also said that the formation of a new Third Sector team within the Public Service Reform Directorate was a “great opportunity to bring together policy interests across the spectrum of third sector, social economy.”
