Tories seek views on volunteer plan
By Indira Das-Gupta, Third Sector, 17 October 2007
The Conservatives are inviting feedback from the third sector, particularly youth organisations, on their proposal for school-leavers to take part in a six-week 'national citizen service' volunteering programme.
David Cameron, the Conservative leader, put the idea forward earlier this year (Third Sector, 10 September). Participants would have to attend a graduation-style ceremony and would be awarded grants on completing the programme. It is aimed at boosting community relations and civic participation.
Half the grants would go to organisations that could help participants' personal development. The other 50 per cent would go to good causes of their choice.
