Sue Ryder wants unwanted gifts

Sue Ryder Care is staging a post-Christmas 'Unwanted Gifts Amnesty' with the help of Green Santa, the mascot of the recycling campaign Choose2Reuse.

The charity is calling on people to donate unwanted presents to any of its 370 shops, rather than throwing them away. The initiative is endorsed by Choose2Reuse, which is encouraging people to think about the environmental impact of jettisoning gifts, and Sue Ryder will use the campaign’s Green Santa mascot on its promotional materials.

Alan Hodges, director of retail at Sue Ryder Care, said: “It is a fact of life that some of the gifts under the tree will be wide of the mark. The temptation is to either hide these gifts at the back of the wardrobe or throw them away while no one is looking. But these gifts can be converted into vital funds.”

Sue Ryder is one of four major charities that ‘Gift-Aid’ donations to charity shops, which adds 28 per cent to the value of each donation. It estimates that 100 gifts could raise £384.
