Healthcare charities 'need more leadership support'

By Emma Maier, Third Sector Online, 17 March 2008

Most medium-sized voluntary sector health and social care organisations don't have enough leadership support, a survey suggests.

Looking after Leaders – Leadership Development for Leaders in the Health and Social Care Sub Sector, conducted by the Third Sector Leadership Centre in association with Henley Management College, says that 95 per cent of the 150 leaders it questioned are unable to access the development they feel they need to advance their leadership skills.

The research also reveals that managers prefer more creative and flexible forms of support, such as coaching, mentoring, networking and internet-based learning rather than traditional classroom-style education.

“Charities of this size are under increasing pressure to deliver with scant resources, but managers are simply not being given the support to develop,” said Tracy Beasley, manager of the Third Sector Leadership Centre.

“Leaders are seeking creative ways to access the learning that they need, but this needs to be supported in a structured way to ensure development is accessible to those most in need.”

Thought this might be useful background research when thinking of enterprising initiatives! Coaching might be more attractive to some than training - could we work in partnership with coaching providers?
