Minister responds to readers' questions

The Government is determined to avoid preventative services delivered by charities being cut during the economic downturn, according to charities minister Kevin Brennan.

Fathers4Justice to focus on campaigning

By Rosie Walker, Third Sector Online, 27 August 2008

Pressure group Fathers4Justice has decided to stop providing support services and concentrate on campaigning because it says the demand for practical help has become too high.

Fathers4Justice’s advice service currently supports about 20,000 fathers a year who are going through the family justice system. From September, registrations for the advice forum will not be accepted and existing memberships will not be renewed when they expire.

The group said it did not have sufficient resources to help people such as Brian Philcox, the father who killed himself and his children in June during a custody battle after contacting F4J to ask for help. It said it was becoming too difficult to control the actions of individuals claiming to be part of the group.

Matt O'Connor, founder of F4J, said: "In recent months we have realised that the odds are insurmountable and biblical in scale. We simply don't have the training or resources to help the thousands of parents seeking help, often in a desperate and tragic state."

He said the group would now focus on campaigning for fathers’ rights, researching the effects of fatherlessness and tackling family breakdown.

"We can't save every person currently affected, but we can make incremental differences over time through our campaign so that the next generation of fathers can benefit," he said.
