Peace group leads the way with diversity standard
By Sarah Townsend, Third Sector Online, 27 August 2008
The National Centre for Diversity has called for more voluntary organisations to work towards its Investors in Diversity standard after a Leeds-based charity with two staff became one of the first in the sector to achieve the mark.
Together for Peace, which tackles peace, conflict and justice issues, works with communities throughout Leeds to coordinate peace-building activities and events.
"As an organisation that exists to celebrate diversity and promote dialogue, we are delighted to have achieved the IiD standard," said Mike Love, core team member. "The process towards achieving accreditation was a really helpful learning exercise for us.
Solat Chaudhry, executive director of Investors in Diversity, said others in the sector should follow the lead. "The achievement is all the greater when you consider that it has only two full-time staff. If it can achieve this standard, so can other community and voluntary sector organisations."
Together for Peace joined the NCVO in July. Gillen Knight, head of marketing and membership at the NCVO, said: "We are very proud. Let's hope that Together for Peace has set a precedent that the rest of the sector will follow."
