Shaw Trust threatens legal action over Acevo comments

By Andy Ricketts, Third Sector Online, 27 August 2008

The Shaw Trust has said it will take legal action against chief executives body Acevo unless it withdraws comments made in a press release calling for the reinstatement of Ian Charlesworth, the trust's managing director.

The Shaw Trust put Charlesworth on gardening leave and told staff of his departure earlier this month (Third Sector, 6 August, page 1).

Acevo responded to the news by publicly backing Charlesworth, who is a member of the organisation, and sent out a press release calling for his reinstatement. The trust's lawyers have now sent a letter to Acevo threatening legal action over comments made in the press release.

Stephen Bubb, chief executive of Acevo, said the organisation would not be frightened off and would continue to fight for Charlesworth's reinstatement. "We have received a letter from the Shaw Trust's lawyers challenging comments Acevo has made," he said. "Our solicitors will be answering this shortly and will address all the points they have raised."

Bubb declined to comment on the precise nature of the trust's demands, but the complaint is thought to centre on a statement in the press release about staff confidence in Shaw Trust leadership.

"I think it is a shame that the Shaw Trust feels it appropriate to resort to legal action when it should be spending its time resolving the current issues for the benefit of its staff," added Bubb.

The Shaw Trust declined to comment.
