Shortlist announced for Third Sector Excellence Awards

British Heart Foundation and Giveacar are among nominees for the sector's top awards

More than 100 organisations from across the voluntary sector have been shortlisted for this year’s Third Sector Excellence Awards.

Finalists include the British Heart Foundation in the communications campaign category for its high-profile Hands-only CPR initiative, and social enterprise Giveacar, which has been shortlisted in the innovation in fundraising category for the way it has raised funds by getting people to donate their unwanted vehicles.

Individuals on the list include Hannah Jones, who has been shortlisted as volunteer of the year for her work at the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, and Peter Bennett-Jones of Comic Relief, who is in the running for the charity chair of the year award.

A record 450 entries were received across 20 category areas for this year’s awards. The winners of two other awards – the Luke FitzHertbert lifetime achievement and the Excellence Awards overall winner – will be decided by Third Sector and announced on the awards night.

The winners will be named at a black-tie awards ceremony at the Lancaster London hotel on Thursday 27 September.

Stephen Cook, editor of Third Sector, said: "Our 30 judges did a magnificent job drawing up this shortlist, which contains some of the best entries we have seen in the eight years of the awards. Times might be hard in the voluntary sector, but the quality of the work is as good as ever."
