Charities urged to focus on legacies

By Hannah Jordan, Third Sector, 20 August 2008

Legacy promotion consortium Remember a Charity is launching a campaign that urges charities to step up their legacy fundraising.

The group, made up of more than 140 charities, is preparing to announce details of the campaign to its members after a recent study into the public's motivation for leaving money to charity (Third Sector Online, 7 May).

The campaign will be launched this autumn and is expected to focus on the 'baby boomer' generation and making legacy giving the social norm.

Stephen George, chair of the consortium, said the new campaign could operate only with the sector's full support. "Legacy fundraising must become part and parcel of our everyday fundraising work," he said.

"If we make a long-term investment to help people understand the concept of leaving a gift, we can make a remarkable difference."
