Joe Saxton, co-founder of nfpSynergy, says none of the main political parties can take comfort from research

Only 11 per cent of people think the coalition government has had a positive impact on charities so far, according to new research by the consultancy nfpSynergy.

The results of the research were published in the organisation’s latest Charity Awareness Monitor, which is based on the responses of a representative sample of 1,000 British adults to charity-related questions.

Forty-four per cent of respondents disagreed with the statement "the coalition government has had a positive impact on charities so far".

Asked which of the main political parties was most supportive of charities, 55 per cent said they did not know. Nineteen per cent said Labour, 12 per cent said the Conservatives and 11 per cent the Liberal Democrats.

Joe Saxton, co-founder of nfpSynergy, said: "With its big society agenda supposedly placing ever greater onus on British charities, the coalition government – arguably not least its Lib Dem element – might well be alarmed by this research, which shows the public think its impact on such an apparently crucial sector has not yet proven positive."

But Saxton said Labour could take small comfort from being seen as the most "pro-charity" of the three parties because most people did not know which party was most supportive of charities.
