Alastair Wilson of School for Social Entrepreneurs says it wants to build a force of people who will bring change to their local communities

The School for Social Entrepreneurs wants social entrepreneurs to apply for a scheme that offers grants to help them grow or start their businesses and provides training to make them more effective.

The Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme has been set up with funding worth £6m from Lloyds over five years. The scheme is offering grants of between £4,000 and £25,000 to social entrepreneurs and a year’s worth of training at the SSE.

Each successful applicant will receive a grant plus a year’s worth of training from the school at one of eight locations in the UK, which consists of about 14 days of contact time in blocks over the year.

The programme is offering 150 places a year over the next five years. There will be 130 ‘start-up’ awards, which include a grant of £4,000 plus training and support from the SSE; 20 ‘scale-up’ awards, which include a grant of £15,000 and training and support from the SSE; and one Lloyds Banking Group social entrepreneur of the year award, which includes a grant of £25,000 plus training and support from the SSE.

Applications for the programme close at 10am on 28 May.

Alastair Wilson, chief executive of the School for Social Entrepreneurs, said: "Our vision is to build a force of community entrepreneurs who will unleash the potential for people-powered change in their communities, leading initiatives that bring business skills and social aims together to lift the fortunes of hundreds of thousands of people."
