Academics take up positions with rival London charity unit

Three key staff from the Centre for Government and Charity Management at South Bank University have been recruited by a rival London academic centre.

Professor Paul Palmer, Professor Jenny Harrow and fundraising expert Sue Douthwaite are to join the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at City University.

As Third Sector went to press , it was unclear what will happen to the four remaining staff at the South Bank centre, which runs the UK's largest masters degree programme for voluntary sector managers, and last year launched a new masters degree in voluntary administration.

The latest moves are part of an expansion of City University's Centre for Charity Effectiveness, which merged with the Company of Management Consultants in the summer.

One source said there was a widespread view that there were too many small academic charity units, and there needed to be some consolidation.
