Barnardo's Toy Exchange scheme with Argos raises £700,000 in six weeks

People who gave toys to sell in the charity's shops received a money-off voucher for the retailer's stores

Barnardo’s partnership with the retailer Argos has raised £700,000 through its six-week Toy Exchange campaign.

Argos shoppers donated more than 71,000 bags of unwanted toys that could be sold in shops belonging to the children’s charity. Argos gave those donating toys a voucher offering £5 off when they spent £35 at its stores.

Barnardo’s has 500 shops around the UK. During the Toy Exchange campaign, the charity received a total of 71,251 bags of toys, at an average value of £10 per bag.

Gerard Cousins, director of retail and trading at Barnardo’s, said: "Christmas is one of our busiest times, so receiving this substantial boost to our stock is great.

"Donations are essential in order to keep our stores trading. All profits from selling these items are ploughed directly into Barnardo’s work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children, so a huge thank-you to everyone who has donated."

John Walden, managing director of Argos, said: "This is the first time Argos has been involved in such a partnership and we are truly delighted by the level of support our customers and colleagues have shown."
