Hamilton spent 20 years at Citibank, eventually becoming head of UK money market trading, before moving to ex-offenders charity Nacro, where she was chief operating officer.

The Blue Cross, which has a turnover of £25m a year, is currently launching a plan to expand the range of services it offers. It plans to expand its animal adoption and veterinary services across the UK, extend its education programme, increase the involvement of volunteers and develop its supporter base.

"We are delighted to welcome Kim," said Diane Sinclair, chair of the charity. "Her strong financial roots and third sector experience mean she is perfectly placed to drive the charity forward."
