Wakley has been promoted to chief executive at the international aid charity after three years as international programmes director.

He succeeds Michael Godfrey, who has joined the Church of England as a minister after five years leading the charity.

"This is a challenging time for all NGOs because we face a global recession and a subsequent reduction in major donor funding," said Wakley.

"Cord's mandate of peace-building across the conflict spectrum remains crucial as we strive to see an end to the vicious circle that is produced by poverty and violent unrest."
