CAREERS: Worth a Look ..

JOHN PLUMMER

The Community Fund's new web site holds your hand through the unfathomable maze of filling in forms by explaining why it exists, whom it supports and how to get your paws on some cash.

Of every £1 spent on the National Lottery, 4.7p goes towards the fund, making it the country's biggest funder of charities and voluntary groups. Since 1995, it has awarded £2.2 billion to more than 48,000 projects.

A pre-home page, designed simply in black and Oxfam green, informs that the site is available in text only or enhanced format. As the name suggests, the text version is a nuts and bolts journey through the Community Fund with no fancy images to slow each page download.

The enhanced version includes visuals, but as most show the groups that have benefited, they aren't essential. Both versions are designed to be accessible to people with sight impairments.

There are details of the new international grants programme for UK charities working abroad, but the most useful facet of the site is the section on project funding. It is broken down into three sections on the criteria for funding, making a good application and guidance on filling in forms.
