Cash grants out, smart cards in

Helen Barrett

A disability charity is replacing cash grants to beneficiaries with prepaid smart cards that can be spent at chosen retailers.

Family Fund, which last year paid grants worth £25.5m to more than 45,000 families on restricted incomes and with severely disabled children, says the process of providing additional grants will be simplified by adding future grants to the existing cards. When families receive their cards, the funds will be available to spend immediately.

Derek Walpole, deputy chief executive of the fund, said: "Our association with a number of UK retailers enables the fund to obtain discounts and rebates that are ploughed back into the grant-making process, with the result that more grants go to more families."
