Coalition to lobby on call for action

A coalition representing community groups is to lobby the Government for changes to a bill that aims to enable residents to demand action on local problems.

The Community Alliance, a partnership consisting of Bassac, the Development Trusts Association and Community Matters, warned that the 'community call for action', contained in the Local Government Bill, will exclude the most marginalised residents because it has to be instigated by local councillors.

Ben Hughes, chief executive of Bassac, said it was not a community call for action at present, because it assumed people engaged with the local democratic process. "Some of the people we are working with would never engage with their local councillors," he said.
