Communications News: Friends of the Earth lobbies MEPs online to amend 'toxic' law

Friends of the Earth has launched a multilingual website urging Europeans to lobby MEP candidates to pledge support for tougher chemical legislation.

The EU is currently debating Europe's biggest reform of chemical legislation, which environmentalists hope will end the global contamination of humans, animals and the environment by hazardous chemicals.

However, campaigning by the chemical industry has led to a weakening of the proposal that was originally put forward by the European Commission.

Candidates who become MEPs in the European elections on 10 June will have a vital role to play in shaping new laws. The website, www.chemicalreaction.org, allows the public to email them in 16 member countries.

The campaign asks MEP candidates to sign a pledge committing them to vote for the identification and substitution of all chemicals of 'very high concern'.
