The Maternity Alliance has been awarded £98,000, the largest tranche of funding it has received from the Inland Revenue, to provide free training to new parents about tax credits.
The half-day courses will educate charity advisors to make people taking maternity, paternity or adoption leave aware of their entitlements.
The grant specifically targets disadvantaged groups. The courses will be run in-house and in voluntary groups' offices in Birmingham, Brighton, Cardiff, Leicester, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham.
The courses will run between now and April, and have been advertised via email and leaflets posted to voluntary and community organisations working with minority ethnic groups and low-income families across the UK.
Some people claiming the entitlements have been informed that they have been overpaid, and are having previously awarded benefits reclaimed. The courses will aim to help parents avoid such outcomes.
Outreach sessions will also invite clients to get answers to general questions about paternity and maternity rights.
