Traidcraft is urging people to look beyond the facade of paradise holidays to see the poverty of local people in many popular tourist destinations.

A new fundraising appeal, designed by Feel, will ask its supporters to donate money to help the charity encourage community trading and eco-tourism in Kenya. It aims to raise £130,000 through a mail-out designed to look like a holiday brochure, which will be sent out this month to coincide with the onslaught of holiday advertising. "At this time of year, it's cold and miserable and people are drawn to the idea of a tropical beach break," said a spokesperson at Traidcraft. "But we're hoping to help them look behind the pictures of romantic sunsets and see the other world where thousands of people live on less than $2 a day."
