Childcare charity the Daycare Trust announced last week that it will merge with the National Association of Family Information Services.

Nafis has recently lost funding from the Department for Education and seen its income halved.

Anand Shukla, acting chief executive of the Daycare Trust, said Nafis would become a wholly owned subsidiary of his organisation but would retain its name.

Shukla said Nafis had three staff on temporary contracts, including an interim chief executive who would remain employed for one more month. Of the other two staff, one had already left and the other would continue work in the trust offices.

"Some months ago, Nafis decided to look at its position," Shukla said. "It could have carried on independently, but decided it would be more effective with a partner. It looked at a number of entities, and settled on us.

"We’ve previously worked with it very closely. It supports family information officers, and we already provide training and information to those officers."
