DEC launches appeal for victims of Haiti earthquake

Phone lines open and TV appeal is expected to be broadcast on Friday

The Disasters Emergency Committee has launched a fundraising appeal for those affected by the Haiti earthquake.

The committee, made up of 13 UK-based international aid charities, opened its donation phone lines and website at midnight. A spokesman for the organisation said it expected to broadcast a TV appeal on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Al Jazeera on Friday.

The money raised will be allocated to the DEC's member charities to support their work in the area.

One hundred thousand people are feared dead as a result of the quake, measured at a magnitude of 7.0, which struck at just before 5pm local time on Tuesday about 10 miles from the capital city, Port-au-Prince.
