Edge Hill University offers postgraduate courses in charity management

Certificate, diploma and MA courses will begin in September

A Lancashire university is setting up postgraduate courses in third sector management.

Edge Hill University, near Ormskirk, is starting the courses, available at certificate, diploma and MA level, in September.

The courses have been organised in partnership with Lancashire Learning Consortium, a group of local voluntary organisations. The consortium has secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund to pay for some local charity and community staff to study the course.

Stuart Speeden, director of the university's Centre for Local Policy Studies, said: "There's a very limited set of options for coming into the sector. Most management courses don't address the particular needs of the voluntary sector, such as social auditing and managing volunteers."

Each course includes four core modules in financial and business planning, governance, managing people and partnership and collaboration. Existing managers can opt to take a single module if they want to improve their skills in a particular area.

Speeden said he hoped the new courses would offer specific training for people in the voluntary sector that was not available in most general management courses.

"There is a recognised need to build capacity in the voluntary sector," he said. "This is an opportunity for people to move into sector management and for current managers to enhance their qualifications."

A certificate course for people sponsored by the Lancashire Learning Consortium will start in September. Courses for the wider public will begin in March 2010.
