Euro volunteering year 'will be 2011'

Director of lobbying campaign says date is confirmed

The European Year of Volunteering will go ahead in 2011, according to organisations close to the initiative.

A planned change in European Commission personnel this year had prompted fears that the event could be pushed back to 2013 (12 December, page 3). During the year, EUR15m (£13m) would be spent on promoting volunteering across the European Union.

But Markus Held, director of the European Volunteer Centre, which has been coordinating a campaign to lobby for the year with 17 volunteering organisations, said he had received an email from a commission official last week confirming that it had received instructions to prepare for the year to be held in 2011.

Officials are expected to rubber-stamp the plan in the next few weeks, said Held.

Tamara Flanagan, director of European issues at CSV, which is involved in the network, said it expected the year to take place in 2011.
