FINANCE NEWS: CFDG gives backing to Queen's Speech draft charities bill

The Charity Finance Directors' Group says it is delighted with plans for a draft charities bill in the Queen's Speech.

CFDG is a member of the Charities Bill Coalition, formed last year, which has campaigned for the publication of the bill.

CFDG director Shirley Scott said: "We are pleased that the Government has recognised the huge importance of charities, and the need for regulatory reform. We are looking forward to seeing the definitions of charitable purposes being set out in a modern statute, instead of being based on case law and analogy going back 400 years."

But the group also criticised stories in the media, which used the announcement of the draft bill to attack face-to-face fundraising. "Charity finance directors fear that this will lead to a decline in confidence in a sector that performs a significant public good, and plays a major part in bringing about change in society," the organisation said in a statement.
