The City of Edinburgh Council has produced a risk management guide for community groups that organise public events.
Understanding Insurance and Risk Management gives tips on how smaller voluntary groups can evaluate risks, create adequate controls and assess the correct level of insurance cover.
"This guide points community organisations in the right direction so that they can better protect community members, visitors and themselves," said councillor Maureen Child, the council's executive member for finance and sustainability.
"There are always risks and hazards associated with putting on any event.
Should anything go wrong, however, it could cost a community a huge amount of money and distress."
The guide was conceived to help organisations taking part in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which this year runs until 28 August.
