Foundation aims to nurture future campaigners

A charity that aims to nurture the next generation of campaigners has been launched in honour of Dame Sheila McKechnie.

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation, established in memory of the former director of the Consumers' Association and Shelter, will award 10 campaigners the opportunity to shadow politicians, journalists and academics. Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, BBC creative director Alan Yentob and Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger have so far volunteered to be shadowed.

Jessica Morris, chair of the new charity said: "We want to put campaigning back on the map, as the sector has been more focused on service provision. We believe a lot of politicians and journalists will welcome this and see it is a way to boost democracy."

The charity expects to announce the different categories and invite nominations within the next two to three months. Placements will be tailor-made for each winner, in order to help them get the most out of the experience.

The charity has been set up using £100,000 donated by Shelter, Which? and Sheila McKechnie's widower.
