Foundation support organisations study feasibility of merger

An outline for a proposed merger of the Association of Charitable Foundations and the Community Foundation Network is expected to be announced this week.

The plans were flagged to members of the Community Foundation Network in its January newsletter.

The two organisations have a similar purpose of supporting trusts and foundations, but while the Association of Charitable Foundations is a UK-wide organisation supporting all types of groups, the Community Foundation Network focuses on helping local community foundations with grass-roots initiatives.

The two groups have commissioned a feasibility study, supported by the Baring Foundation.

Both bodies have new chief executives who will oversee any change in working practice. David Emerson was appointed as chief executive of the Association of Charitable Foundations following the departure of Nigel Siederer, and Marion West has recently come on board at the helm of the Community Foundation Network.

Neither party was prepared to comment on the proposed merger until their members had been informed of any decision.
